Wendy Ewald is a writer, photographer, and teacher dedicated to children's issues. Her photos have appeared in The New York Times, Elle, Harper's, and DoubleTake, among others, and are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography. She has received numerous prizes for her work, among them a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a MacArthur Fellowship. The poems and photographs in this book are drawn from Literacy Through Photography, a program she originated in the Durham, NC public schools.

In places the author speculates on devices capable of powering interstellar flight, throws out several technical terms without any explanation or understanding, sort of hoping the effort is sufficient to satisfy a casual reader or willing believer.
The strongest sections of the book are when Dr Leir describes the analyses of the fifteenth and sixteenth objects he removed; the objects are certainly curious and do not seem to fit within what you'd expect of materials commonly found here, but his analyses still fall short in my opinion I wish he had further pursued the investigation of these items, for example, perhaps had a truly independent lab verify his findings. We were always the only Americans in these places (it was real insider advice) and they were all terrific (which is a big difference from what my cousin experienced when she traveled with a Rick Steve's guide---she ran into Americans everywhere she said, whch was disappointing and why we didn't get that book, thoug
